Keep your glow through the summer heat!

Summertime is just around the corner. For most of us, the season brings to mind vacations and mini getaways, ice creams and trips to the beach, picnics, pool parties and all kinds of fun. For your skin, this could mean longer hours in the sun, exposure to humidity and harmful UV rays. Luckily, keeping you hydrated and glowing through the summer heat is a fairly simple matter.

Here are our top 7 tips to keep your skin healthy through the next few months.

  1. Double up on the sunscreen.

The most important thing that you can do for your skin is to protect it from the sun – not doing this can create ‘Sunspots’, leaving the skin with hyper-pigmentation

Invest in a good quality sunscreen and make sure you use it liberally all over your exposed skin (face, neck, hands and feet). Look for a sunscreen that has a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or more, with broad-spectrum protection. Always use your sunscreen about 20-30 minutes before you step out, and reapply every two hours or so, especially if you are outdoors.

  1. Ease up on your daily routine.

Heavy moisturizers and layers of makeup can feel like a lot on your face in the summertime – and clog your pores, leading to breakouts. So unless you have a condition that calls for it, we suggest trying out vegan skin-care as the ingredients are plant-based and are more kinder to your skin.

  1. Go gentle on your skin.

Let your skin breathe a little. Cleansing, exfoliating and shaving can strip your skin of the moisture it needs. But you can protect your skin by limiting your use of hot water and your bath or shower time, replacing strong soaps with mild cleansers, exfoliating regularly (but not too frequently), and blotting or patting your skin dry after washing it.

  1. Hydrate hydrate hydrate!

One of the best things that you can do for your skin is keeping it hydrated from the inside – by drinking loads of water (- it’s always a good idea to carry a bottle of water with you). Another great way to ensure that you stay hydrated is to eat ‘water’ foods such as watermelon, cucumber, celery, apples, lettuce, peaches, tomatoes and zucchini.

  1. Dress for the weather.

Protecting your skin doesn’t stop at the beauty aisle. Dressing appropriately for the weather can also help to protect your skin and maintain a healthy glow. Think wide brim hats or caps, sunglasses and clothing made with tightly woven fabrics.

  1. Manage stress.

Higher stress levels can make your skin more sensitive and prone to breakouts and other skin issues (aside from its other effects). Making time for yourself, managing your stress and getting enough sleep will not only help you get your glow on but also make for a happier you too!

  1. Get your protein in!

They say that you are what you eat – and this certainly holds true for a gorgeous complexion (whatever the season). Protein is one of the key components of skin tissue, so it’s unsurprising that it is also essential for glowing skin. A healthy diet consisting of fruits, veggies, whole grains and proteins goes a long way. You could also consider a protein powder, such as Origin Nutrition’s vegan protein powder is a great choice for vegans, vegetarians and even regular omnivores, as it can be used in a number of fun ways, from smoothies to cookies, to regular everyday dishes.

Simply put, your skin’s needs are a little different during the summer and the winter. The key to keeping it healthy and glowing is getting your basics right, and altering your routine a bit for the seasons. A sensible care routine, along with a healthy diet and lifestyle can keep you looking and feeling younger than your years. And who doesn’t want that?!!
